Trudi's writing is so captivating in her opening chapter. You just get dragged right into the action of the Purge and then you're off! Whoosh!

It's really effective, becuase it hooks you in. Once hooked you can't help but to read on and on and on and before you know it you've finished the book. I recently bought the first book in her new trilogy, 'Priestess of the White'. Although the opening chapter isn't as action packed as the purge, Canavan still drags you in by starting her stories at dramatic points. This technique isn't present in the beginning of the 'The Novice' or 'The High Lord', which suggests that its her trick of the trade, when drawing in new readers. Can you think of any other books that start so boldly?

Northern Lights, The gift.. to name a couple I agree she does pull you in as did her second series but i don't think she felt it was necessary in the second and third book, we already knew how much we loved the book and would read it to the end even if it was a real let down... i think she knew that too.
